(Nan’s Note: This is true everywhere, not just in Australia. The larger the home, the more resources are used in building, and the more energy it uses on a daily basis. Most large homes have a lot of wasted space in them. Many people actually live in a fraction of their home. I grew up in a house like that! So, is this a builder issue or a consumer issue?)

Australian houses, the biggest in the world, outrank those of any other country for the size of their carbon footprints, leading to calls to reconsider the obsession with house size.

The more rooms in a house, the greater the need for lighting, heating and cooling, pushing up the level of greenhouse gas emissions from each dwelling, said a NSW Greens MP, John Kaye.
